VMware Multi Hypervisor Manager

by admin

VMware vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is a component that enables support for heterogeneous hypervisors in VMware vCenter Server. You can check out the release notes here. I’ve recently installed it in my lab with a view to managing some Hyper-V hosts from within vCenter. This is a quick post covering the install process.

Installing VMware Multi Hypervisor Manager 1.1

The first step is to install the Multi Hypervisor Management software itself. This is a single windows executable to be installed on your vCenter server. After the initial install wizard screens you will be prompted to choose whether you want to generate a certificate or use an existing one:

After clicking next, you will be asked to specify your vCenter details:

Next, we will be prompted to accept vCenter’s SSL certificate, before being asked to provide credentials under which the multi hypervisor management service will run:

The next screen will prompt you to configure connection settings. It’s recommended to use an IP address here (in the drop down menu) rather than FQDN:

The next screen will ask whether we want to configure connection properties for VMware Converter. This is optional. The last step here is to click ‘Install’.

Once the installer is complete, we can go ahead and install the vCenter plugin:

Another install wizard will begin, though there aren’t any configuration options with this one. Once the install has finished you should see a new plugin in vCenter:

You’re now ready to get started with managing non-VMware hypervisors from within vCenter. You can see a VMWorld demo of the tool here.
